STORE PROFILE: RAD STORE
In this week's Store Profile, we catch up with the lads from Newcastle's Rad Store. Here's what they had to say...
So first up what’s the deal with RAD Store?
Well RAD is a lifestyle store located in Newcastle NSW started in 2009 with a long time friend Justin Lees. From small beginnings it has grown over the past few years, with us moving to a bigger, better location and hosting a huge range of brands! We also have a sweet Mexican blanket!
You guys are located in Newcastle, what’s the scene like there?
The scene in Newcastle is fantastic!! Tons of the countries top skaters, bands and surfers have called Newcastle home or spent a good amount of time here surfers like Craig Anderson, Jesse Adam, Matt Hoy, Luke Egan, Michael Spencer...all Newy boys!! To many good bands to begin and a host of fantastic skaters! We have a nightclub called "Fanny's", I mean what's not to love?
You have been stocking NB for a few months, what made you pick up the brand and what sets it apart from the other guys out there?
Well it was actually Justin who put forward the idea of stocking NB and he ain't writing this haha! Since then I have fallen in love with the brand. I guess the 1300 caught my eye, I actually have them on as I write this! I love the time and effort that goes into making a pair, I love the structure of the company! Too many shoe companies are like a mass produced machine...
As well as a neat FW range you also tell a great apparel story, what are some of your favourite brands?
I don't know where to start. Nudie, Carhartt, Uppercut Deluxe, Actual Pain...Bellroy wallets are killing it at the moment! The Passport guys are ruling and Herschel bags...we honestly have too many to mention! Check out www.radnc.com or the old Facebook for some more info.
Finally what’s on the cards for the rest of 2012, any exciting plans?
Well I am really looking forward to expanding our own range and our online store will be done soon! And I'm sure Justin has an event or two up his sleeve!!
1980s NB PRINT AD
We came across the original 1980s ad for the New Balance 620s, which have been re-released in the form of a Past, Present, Future capsule of three models: the vintage-style re-issue of the 1970s model, plus two modernised versions of the original silhouette, available now through selected retailers.

DAKOTA 501 TREND FORECAST
We're very proud to have been featured on Dakota 501's Trend Forecast not too far back. The crew were overseas for the NY and Paris fashion events where they noticed an increasing numbers of NBs hitting the streets. The iconic Chapel St denim store stocks the 574s in a number of colourways, and while you're there, be sure to check out some of the other great brands they have in store.
ALFIE'S | STORE PROFILE
It may have been a minute since our last store profile but we are back. NB took 5 with Sydney boutique Alfie’s Store, these guys have a stellar line up of footwear and clothing and we sat down with them to see what makes them tick.
Q: Hey guys, firstly for those who don’t know tell us a bit about Alfies Store. When did you guys first open and what made you guys take the leap into opening a store?
The name ‘Alfie’s” comes from the original Lewis Gilbert film released in1966. It’s got a very humorous yet cheeky script, and Michael Caine plays Alfie with such an infectious charm, which is impossible not to get you intrigued.
Q: In a cluttered market how do you guys aim to set yourself apart from the rest of the pack?
It’s simple. We are not out there to compete, but we can provide you with really need, clothing wise! If you are looking for something different, something classic, with great quality & durability, that’s what we’re about.
Since 2007, alfie’s store has settled in the heart of Balmain, which is an organic receptive community outside west of Sydney city. Influenced by its surrounding neighbours, we carries prime local and international brands, which are inspired by modernism, classic style and natural fabrication. alfie’s store has a broad mix of both fashion & lifestyle products.
Q: You guys have just picked up the NB range, what is it you like about the brand and what sets it apart from the other brands in the market?
We love New Balance because its great quality that is affordable. It has a well-established history behind the name, and backed by product experts. This are the things we take into consideration the most.
Q: Apart from NB what other brands do you guys have on the racks?
New Balance is one of our favourite sneaker brands. We carry clothing labels such as Paul Smith, Fred Perry, Three Over One, YMC, and B Store to name a few. We have also recently welcomed a mix of publications into the business such as Sneaker Freaker, Smith Journal, Monster Children and Ampersand Magazine.
Q: Finally do you guys have any exciting plans for the rest of the year?
We have recently moved to a bigger space in Balmain down the road. We have finally settled and now ready for our next challenge … online! Visit us soon alfiesstore.com.au.
